New Afton HATSF C-Zone Stabilization Earthworks

THE PROJECT

Work consisted of the heavy civil earthworks construction involved in the C-Zone Stabilization and over 765,000 cubic meters of earth and rock. The project start was delayed due to permitting, so Acres’ team utilized this time to re-sequence the owners schedule and adjust for quantity variations from the original design. Through this, we were able to accelerate and complete the project over 300 days ahead of schedule and save the owner considerable delay costs.

SCOPE OF WORK

  • The supply and installation of geotextile fabric and the construction of a base pad via the placement of granular material (i.e., tailings sand).
  •  The supply and installation of HDPE piping and installation of owner supplied cables for VWPs installed by the wick drain contractor.
  • The construction of a surcharge load via the placement of rock fill material.
  • The construction of a steep spillway via excavation to its prescribed design extents, and the subsequent placement of filter materials and rip-rap armouring.
  • Ground improvements of the area in front of the spillway by excavation and replacing the excavated area with rock fill.
  • The construction of the subsidence offset berm via the placement of compacted rock fill.
  • The placement of a rock fill cap on the NATSF stabilization pad.
