Time to fall back safely! ⏰
Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 3rd, which means it’s time to set those clocks back an hour!
While adjusting the clock seems easy enough, our internal clocks may need a bit of help adjusting. As the days get darker, you might feel a bit sluggish, especially during your morning and evening commutes.
Here are some quick tips from Acres’ HSE team to help you ‘fall back’ safely:
- Prepare Your Body: Start going to bed 10-15 minutes earlier in the days leading up to the change. Going to bed 10-15 earlier every night gives your body more time to adjust to the change.
- Sleep Well: Aim for 8.5 hours each night. Even one hour less can affect your health!
- Limit Screen Time: Ditch those screens an hour before bed for better sleep quality.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink water to help fight fatigue.
- Be Visible: Wear high-visibility apparel, especially in low-light conditions.
- Be Honest: If you feel fatigue is impacting you negatively, please speak to your supervisor so they can adjust your task if needed.
- Ensure all vehicle lights are working.
- Workplace incidents – Workplace incidents increase after daylight savings. Take extra time to assess your work & work area before starting a task.
- High visibility apparel – Always wear your high visibility apparel and ensure it is clean.
- Keep perspective: Resist the temptation to stay up late because you have an “extra” hour.
- Check all alarms – When you set your clock back, use it as a reminder to check and replace the batteries in our smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test them to ensure they are working properly – especially with the increased use of furnaces and fireplaces during colder months.
- Check Drive BC for road conditions before travelling as conditions change quickly.
- Ensure your vehicle has a snow brush, a spare in good condition and you have the knowledge to change a tire (where is the car jack, where is the spare tire located).
